The Duke of Cambridge, 36, shared the revelation while speaking at the launch of Mental Health at Work, a UK-based initiative that helps support mental health causes in the workplace.

He said: "I took a lot home without realising it. You see [so] many sad things every day that you think life is like that".

"That you're always dealing with despair, sadness, injury, things that are really quite troubling".

'The attrition builds up and you don't really have the opportunity to off-load it'.

Mind surveyed more than 44,000 employees and found that nearly half had experienced a mental health problem at their current job - and only half of this 48 per cent had talked to their employer about it.

A major study into workplace wellbeing by the mental health charity Mind has revealed that poor mental health at work is widespread, with half (48 per cent) of all people surveyed saying they have experienced a mental health problem in their current job.

According to their findings a large part of sharing mental health struggles came from manager confidence - staff who felt their manager supported their mental health or could spot the signs that someone was going through a hard time were far more likely to say they would share their situation.

William said he wanted the gateway to be a "big shift in working culture" and ensure that dealing with mental health is a part of the everyday working life.

He will visit Bristol's Engine Shed to meet people already benefitting from the online gateway.
