Disney has launched its Academy Award "For Your Consideration" campaign for Marvel's Black Panther. After members of the Academy spoke out against the category and took a vote that ultimately resulted in it not being included in this year's ceremony, Marvel's parent company Disney has announced the full roster of categories it's asking Black Panther to be considered for at this year's event. Well, according to Disney's website, all of them, including Best Director (for Ryan Coogler), Best Actor (for Chadwick Boseman), and Best Picture.

This confirms an earlier report that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige okayed a large awards-season campaign budget for Coogler's film, and follows Boseman's remarks that "if there's a campaign, it's for Best Picture, and that's all there is to it".

Although you can't blame them for trying, the bid for so many Oscars for a superhero movie seems a wee bit ambitious - especially since the Academy chose to get rid of the Popular Film award (that was pretty much made for Black Panther in the first place).

Star Chadwick Boseman has said Disney always meant to push Black Panther as a Best Picture contender, but the studio is going well beyond that. (Insert all the fainting, monocle-dropping and pearl-clutching here.) But due to the nearly immediate backlash against the idea, the Academy recently opted to put the idea on hold.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards will be held February 24, 2019.
