CDC urges public to get flu shot by end of October

It might seem like you have plenty of time to get vaccinated, but the best time to get a flu shot is much sooner than you think.

The province's flu shot, free for all Nova Scotians, will be available this fall. Around 180 children have lost their lives from the recent period of flu. If an individual is exposed to the virus in this time, they may develop the flu, despite having been vaccinated against it.

Myth #5 - I never get the flu, I shouldn't bother getting the shot.

According to the CDC recommendations seniors or the elderly are to be given high doses of the vaccine.

"This year, the public will be better protected from flu than ever before, with at-risk groups being offered the most effective vaccine available and every member of NHS staff expected to get their jab".

The Georgia Department of Public Health said it is already getting reports of flu cases around the state although there's no particular pocket of outbreaks yet.

Those making $80K or more per year are particularly likely to say they're planning to get a flu shot, with over half (56%) selecting this response. The CDC says about 80 percent of those children did not get the vaccination.

As we hang on to the very last days of summer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants people to keep the upcoming flu season in the back of their minds. "For example, during the 2016-2017 influenza season, CDC estimates that flu vaccine prevented an estimated 5.3 million illnesses, 2.6 million medical visits, and 85,000 hospitalizations associated with influenza". That includes "all women who are pregnant, are considering pregnancy, are in the postpartum period, or are breastfeeding during the influenza season", the AAP advises.

The vaccination didn't cover last year's flu strain. There were also 150 deaths, including five children, in Georgia. The number of people hospitalized with flu symptoms topped 700,000 last season, CNBC reported.

Any questions about this flu vaccination clinic can be directed to the Accomack County Health Department at 787-5880 or 824-5616, as well as the Northampton County Health department at 442-6228. Although anyone can get the flu, people who are at high risk of serious illness and even death from the flu are strongly encouraged to get the flu vaccine.

They said flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses (the B/Victoria component was changed and the influenza A (H3N2) component was updated).

The CDC notes that ILI activity started to rise in November, and hit its peak in January and February.

He says things got so bad, they had to treat some patients in the hallway. With the memory of last year's deadly flu season still fresh in everyone's memory, the CDC is already urging people to plan their vaccinations.
