Emery challenges Ozil to do more

Emery is hoping for a fresh start for a player he wants to see relishing his opportunity to affect games for the club.

And with speculation over the state of Emery's relationship with Ozil continuing, the Spaniard has again called for the 29-year-old to step up his performance levels.

Emery, though, is ready to treat Saturday's trip to Newcastle United, Arsenal's first game after the worldwide break, as a clean slate for his players, including Ozil.

Here for me it isn't for a lot of the time speaking about what people are telling us.

'The reason is that I am very happy with the last two victories in the Premier League and also with the performances and I want to push every player to be okay to help the team if for one minute, 30 minutes or half time or 90 minutes'.

The midfielder was criticised for posing for photographs with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the build-up to the World Cup, which saw 2014 champions Germany knocked out at the group stage.

He said: "Today, the training in the afternoon is the last session". But Emery is hoping the extra rest and training sessions during the worldwide break - the first since Ozil announced his retirement from Germany - will help the star midfielder find his feet again. "I want to be demanding to prepare for this match - Mesut the same".

"Mesut, like other players, works very well here and also working the ties and also together to improve things".

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis' future looks less certain, though, with AC Milan having re-opened negotiations with him.

It was Gazidis who oversaw the personnel changes after Wenger's departure following more than two decades in charge.

Emery insists he has had no talks about Gazidis leaving. "He is working for the team to help us with his quality".

"I knew Nacho in Spain when he was playing in Osasuna and in Malaga".
