Terry is a free agent and has been training occasionally at Chelsea's training ground after spending a season in the Championship with Aston Villa, which remains a possible destination.

His proposed return to Aston Villa has seen more on-again-off-again moments than a 90s American sitcom in recent weeks.

The iconic defender was set to join the Russian club on a free transfer after leaving Aston Villa, but at the last minute made a decision to pull the plug on the move despite having undergone a medical.

But the same publication have reported just 24 hours later that the move has ran into problems. "He told me a lot of things, that he wants to play, so I'd have to speak to him again". I think it is right that he tries to play.

Chelsea are in action at home to Cardiff City on Saturday but Sarri believes they are still a long way from title contenders despite four wins out of four so far.

"For sure he will be a point of reference for me, for everybody here".

"In this first period, for me it was very important not to change - especially the defensive line", he said.

'I don't know, the last time I spoke to him he told me that he wants to play for another season but I don't know the situation I'm talking one week ago, Chelsea is his home of course, ' Sarri said at his pre-match press conference. I am very open with him because he is the history of the club. "It's what I really want to do".

'I hope, in the future, I will be able to give him space, and give a space to Odoi and Loftus-Cheek.

Loftus-Cheek is a doubt for the game against Cardiff as Chelsea return to Premier League action following the worldwide break.

Cesc Fabregas, however, has rejoined full training and is fit enough to replace the 22-year-old on the bench, though Sarri said he will be cautious with the Spaniard's recovery.
