Not a good surprise, though: In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Christopher Lloyd said that there will be a death during the first half of the season.

At the risk of playing the most morbid game of Guess Who? ever, which "significant character" do you predict will meet an untimely end in Season 10?

It's not yet been confirmed whether season 10 will be the last for the show, which has been a family favourite since premiering in 2010. 'We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it's not easy to do because that's a heavy subject.

At the time, Lloyd went on to explain that they were now discussing how they want the final moments of the show to go, saying that things will ideally end the way they began - with a big family event. While co-creator Steven Levitan has made statements about the show ending, Lloyd is hopeful that the show will continue past season 10.

Lloyd, of course, isn't saying who will be killed off, but he promises that he/she is a "significant character on the series" and the death "will be a moving event - and an event that has repercussions across several episodes". Hyland herself responded to the troubling teaser.

Modern Family returns on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. He added, "there's a decent chance we'll see it happen". 'So our standpoint was, "Well, if we can do another season, we may as well".
