Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg's back injury is ending his hockey career, general manager Ken Holland told reporters Friday.

Zetterberg finishes his career ranking sixth in franchise history in games played (1,082), and fifth in goals (337), assists (623) and points (960).

Zetterberg is scheduled to cost the Red Wings just over $6 million for the next three seasons, though his price in real dollars has been slashed significantly with what remains on his heavily front-loaded 12-year contract originally signed back in 2009.

Holland said Zetterberg will be placed on long-term injured reserve. Despite his health issues he still scored 56 points in 82 games last season - he didn't miss a game.

He finished out the season without practicing. Niklas Kronwall, Justin Abdelkader and Dylan Larkin are the likely candidates.

He had hoped the offseason would allow him to recover, but that wasn't the case.
