VENOM Will Be Rated PG-13

Contrary to long-running speculation, director Ruben Fleischer's Venom has received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA, instead of the widely anticipated R. While many fans are undoubtedly disappointed that Tom Hardy's debut as Eddie Brock won't be as gruesome or violent as they'd hoped, the reason behind Sony's decision is apparently obvious: Spider-Man. Plus, keeping Venom PG-13 would open the door to the character possibly appearing in future Spider-Man movies, and you know that's something Sony's interested in. "If the movie is R, it's hard to do that". "Venom could be in an R-rated movie and a PG-13 movie". It is the first installment of Sony's Marvel Universe, a shared cinematic universe that will also include other movies about supporting Spider-Man characters such as Silver and Black, a movie featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat, the Morbius movie, and Nightwatch.

This seems to suggest that Fleischer and Co. shot some scenes that could potentially shift over to R-rated territory, much like James Mangold did on The Wolverine. Despite Davis' Tweet, Fandango also lists Venom as "NR".

Scheduled to release on October 5th, Venom's said to be presently eyeing a huge $60-$70 million opening weekend which, if gauged correctly, would see the Marvel Entertainment production break the box office record held by Alfonso Cuarón's seven-time Academy Award-winning picture Gravity.
