It's claimed that it could see the Toffees facing a substantial fine or even a points deduction.

The long-running dispute between the two clubs escalated on Thursday with reports in The Times that an independent inquiry has been launched into Everton's recruitment of Silva.

It's claimed that the Premier League hoped the issue between Watford and Everton would be solved while negotiating the purchase of Richarlison during the summer.

Any inquiry could require Everton's hierarchy to hand over their phone records and diaries to a QC, who would seek to uncover any contact between the two parties.

An independent inquiry has been launched by the Premier League into Everton hiring Marco Silva as their manager which could result in a heavy sanction - and in the worst case scenario a points deduction - for the club.

Cole was also fined £75,000 while then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had to pay £75,000 for attending a meeting at a London hotel with the former England defender. Silva was eventually sacked by Watford in January after a deterioration of their results, with one win in 11 matches, with the club saying Everton's "illegal" approach had been a "catalyst for this decision".
