Since announcing he'll be performing at an Austin rally for Democratic Senate hopeful Beto O'Rourke, the country music icon's Facebook page has been jammed with angry messages from fans accusing him of consorting with an anti-American loser, a "socialist commie" and far worse.

The announcement comes after Nelson brought O'Rourke, who is running against Republican Ted Cruz for the Senate, onstage during a July 4 show. Others supported Nelson's entrance into electoral campaigning.

"My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed", the singer and songwriter wrote. This public gesture has upset some of the musician's more politically conservative fans.

"I can think of nothing more American than to peacefully stand up, or take a knee, for your rights, anytime, anywhere, or any place", O'Rourke said at a recent town hall meeting, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"Like we say in Texas, Now Git", yet another wrote.

The move seems to have surprised and upset some of Nelson's fans - even though he has a long record as an activist on a range of liberal issues.

That fan was quickly shot down by a Nelson supporter, who replied: "Lifelong fan unaware of Willie's decades of political activism".

"I have always known that Willie was a Democrat", another said.

The performance will be at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas.

Admission is free but requires an RSVP via O'Rourke's website.
