Nigerians were thrown into shock after news broke that Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has resigned from her position.

Daily Trust reports that the Finance Minister resigned over allegations that she forged her National Youth Service Corps certificate.

Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina in a statement said Buhari thanked Adeosun for her services to the nation. "I believe that in line with this administration's focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign".

Adeosun is credited with helping Nigeria out of recession, plugging leakages in finances, and shoring up foreign reserves.

According to Premium Times, a close source confirmed that she left the country for the UK.

"Adeosun is not a political heavy-weight and her resignation and replacement would be highly unlikely to alter Nigeria's overall fiscal and economic policies", he said in an emailed note.

Nigerian university students have to do a year of national service upon graduation as a way of ensuring that graduates contributed to Nigeria's development.

She instead allegedly procured a fake certificate of exemption from the NYSC to cover her tracks.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier alleged that the Federal Government was planning to secretly fly Adeosun out of Nigeria.
