On Monday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the medical evacuation of all hospitals in flood zones in Myrtle Beach, which led to Grand Strand Medical Center transferring patients to sister hospitals, including Doctors Hospital of Augusta.

The US National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Florence maximum sustained winds were 115 miles per hour as any other regular Category 3 storm, on Wednesday at 8 PM EDT.

As of 11 p.m. EST, the storm was centered 280 miles east southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and was moving northwest at 17 mph.

To back up that point, Graham cited a sobering statistic: "50 percent of the fatalities in these tropical systems is the storm surge - and that's not just along the coast". Some area residents described a harrowing retreat as the storm hit. Tropical Storm Olivia is approaching the Hawaiian islands, the Philippines are bracing for the powerful typhoon Mangkhut, and Tropical Storm Isaac is nearing the Leeward Islands.

Florence is the most unsafe of three tropical systems in the Atlantic.
