Police said a 26-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark off Cape Cod in MA.

The man was boogie boarding off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet shortly after noon when he was attacked, The Associated Press reported.

"Further information will be released by the District Attorney's Office", the police department said.

Residents and guests should avoid swimming near seals, stay close to shore, avoid swimming in areas known for sharks and avoid dawn, dusk and night swimming, among other precautions, the chamber said.

A Cape Cod politician said officials who did not take more aggressive action against sharks bore some responsibility for the fatal attack.

An eyewitness, local fisherman Joe Booth, saw the moment the shark attacked. "I saw a tail and a lot of thrashing".

There have been frequent shark sightings this summer along the outer Cape, often leading to beach closings.

"We are witnessing sharks feeding aggressively in shockingly shallow water on an nearly daily basis over this past August", he wrote.

A 61-year-old man from NY was seriously injured last month, just five miles away, after punching a shark in the gills off Long Nook Beach near the town of Truro.

Witnesses say the man was boogie boarding with a friend when the shark aggressively attacked. He described how the late victim kicked something behind him, before a tale emerged from the water.

'It was like right out of that movie Jaws.

He sustained severe injuries to his legs and is still recovering in hospital. "This has turned into Amity Island real quick out here", he admitted to WBUR. He freed himself by punching the shark in the gills, he told the Boston Globe.
