A U.S. Border Patrol agent was arrested Saturday on suspicion of killing four prostitutes and attempting to kidnap another victim.

He said that authorities believe Ortiz had killed all four women since September 3. State troopers found Ortiz hiding in a truck in a hotel parking lot in Laredo at around 2 a.m. Saturday. Alaniz says authorities consider Ortiz a serial killer.

Further details were sparse.

Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said at a news conference that the agent, Juan David Ortiz, was arrested early Saturday morning.

Alaniz says his office plans to charge Ortiz with four counts of murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping.

But both Alaniz and Cuellar declined to discuss the evidence or say how the women were killed.

Three bodies have been found in the northwest area of the county this month, and Cuellar said authorities are investigating whether there may be a fourth body.

Alaniz said that after the suspect picked up the fifth woman she quickly realised that she was in danger. They also said Ortiz is believed to have been working alone.

47-year-old Claudine Anne Luera was found on Thursday morning in the brush near Camino Colombia about half a mile east of US-83 North with head trauma.

"The manner in which they were killed is similar in all the cases from the evidence", said Alaniz.

Investigators in the latest death case in Laredo have revealed the name of the victim.

The sheriff said that Ortiz was a 10-year veteran supervisor with Border Patrol, local NBC/ABC affiliate KGNS reported.

"The county, the city can rest assured we have the serial killer in custody", Sheriff Cuellar said. We spoke about how more steps need to be taken to make certain that people who want to become Border Patrol agents receive the appropriate psychological screening to ensure that no person who is capable of these type of actions is allowed to join or remain in the ranks.
