Waffle Houses in Florence’s Path Have Begun to Close

When a power outage in 2014 shut down several Cherokee County businesses - the local Waffle House cooked with gas and welcomed customers.

At least one Waffle House location - in Myrtle Beach, S.C. - has closed until the hurricane passes. If locations in the affected area are forced to close, the index is red - and because Waffle Houses are very prepared, this is the rarest scenario.

According to a FEMA blog post, former FEMA administrator W. Craig Fugate decided that Waffle House was worth of its own Index that could be monitored to find out how individual communities were doing in the midst of a threatening storm.

Warner said the index was created in 2004, and because people rely on the Waffle House throughout the year, they expect it to be opened after a storm. If there were a Waffle House in London during The Blitz that bad boy would have been taking orders for steak and eggs in between bursts of anti-aircraft fire.

As the monstrosity that is Hurricane Florence moves closer to the Carolinas, the Waffle House is becoming a member of the list of companies and companies monitoring the storm's every twist and turn. The Southern breakfast chain, which is originate 24 hours a day all year, activated a storm heart to observe the Class 2 typhoon. A green index means a Waffle House is open and offering a full menu. The team also asked people to "plan ahead and be safe".

But Waffle House is different - so different, in fact, that the Federal Emergency Management Agency actually pays close attention to which restaurants the company decides to close during a hurricane or other disaster.

Waffle Houses are known for staying open 24/7, including during a hurricane.

"The Waffle House test doesn't just tell us how quickly a business might rebound - it also tells us how the larger community is faring". The sooner restaurants, grocery stores, and banks re-open - the sooner the local economy and recovery restart. We name it red. We have 250 restaurants, and we are monitoring resources so they can roll in right after the storm. A yellow index indicates that a location is open but serving a limited menu. "You haven't found the bad stuff yet", Fugate said on NPR. "The bigger question is how long restaurants may be closed and how much damage that may occur if they're in the direct path of the storm".

Thank you to the dedicated Waffle House employees who are there to help out!
