Feehery is unsure whether there will be a backlash against #MeToo but he and others underscore the politics - and arguably, the double standards - at play in this and other high-stakes instances involving sexual harassment, assault, or other indiscretions.

"Now the whole nation's trying to figure out something that's not really evident", said Sen. "A lot of people in the Senate weren't going to vote for him anyway". Republicans want to stay on track - aiming for a confirmation vote before October 1, when the court begins its new term.

Washington (CNN)Sexual assault allegations levied against President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee have spurred intensive conversations at the White House over how to proceed, officials and advisers said on Monday.

"This is a tried and true Alinskyite tactic that unfortunately Democrats have been getting away with for decades", Barber complains.

"The FBI does not make any judgment about the credibility or significance of any allegation", Flores said in the statement.

Ford alleged, first in a letter, then in an article to The Washington Post on Sunday, that Kavanaugh attempted to sexually assault her at a party in high school.

One of Kavanaugh's friends was in the room and Kavanaugh covered her mouth to stop her from screaming, she said.

In another opinion piece published by the Journal on Monday, writer Lance Morrow offered a comparison between the accusation against Kavanaugh and the Salem witch trials.

In a statement issued by the White House, Mr Kavanaugh denied the allegation and described it as "completely false".

Shortly before Grassley's announcement, the senator said there would be private, telephone interviews of Kavanaugh and Ford conducted by committee staffers. Democrats refused to participate, saying the seriousness of the charges merited a full FBI investigation.

The accusation against Brett Kavanaugh, who is waiting for the Senate to vote on his nomination, came earlier this month. Thursday's vote will not occur.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake.

Among the GOP defectors was Sen.

However, Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Republican-dominated judiciary committee, said Tuesday that Ford's presence was not confirmed.

"It's a process, and we all feel - speaking for all of the Republicans - we feel that we want to go through this process and we want to give everybody a chance to say what they have to say".

There was enormous pressure on GOP Sens.

One supporter of Kavanaugh also pushed back on some reporting that the White House or Republicans would deploy any aggressive attack, calling it "infuriating".

"Judge Kavanaugh, even before we requested him to testify, he said he was willing to testify". Neither Collins nor Murkowski faces re-election this fall. The Minority withheld even the anonymous allegations for six weeks, only to later decide that they were serious enough to investigate on the eve of the committee vote, after the vetting process had been completed. Richard Blumenthal of CT, said staging the hearing without the FBI investigation would make it a "sham". "I owe her an apology", said Biden, a Democrat. The Justice Department seems to agree. "The FBI is not doing any further investigation". The committee has set a hearing to review both people's testimony on Monday.

Liberal senators sitting on the Senate Judiciary Committee are using this to call for a postponement of the final decision on Kavanaugh's nomination.

Earlier this summer, Palo Alto University Professor Christine Ford penned a letter recounting an incident that purportedly happened while at a high school party in the 1980s. "Many of us are survivors ourselves", the letter reads.
