Very few of the Marvel TV series have featured characters from the films despite the shared MCU landscape.

Per Variety, however, Marvel has plans to launch various new standalone limited series on the Disney streaming service using popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That means Tom Hiddleston is lined up to play Loki and Elizabeth Olsen tapped to play Scarlet Witch. That means big budgets, big production values, and a big bet by Disney on consumer interest in its streaming service.

Variety reports that Disney is now in the process of working on a few new Marvel series that'll be premiering exclusively via their new streaming site.

Good news for anyone anxious that Infinity War - spoiler alert for the three people and Clarence the movie-shy badger who hasn't seen the movie yet - might mean the true end of Loki, or who thought Scarlet Witch didn't have enough to do. According to Variety, "other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies" would also headline their own shows as part of the ambitious new strategy, but the shows would not feature top-tier Avengers who have already been the focus of film franchises.

That's not to say these prospective shows are going to be cheap. Marvel Studios will produce the standalone series with Kevin Feige expected to have a high level of involvement.

This is big news, and only bolsters Disney Play's power. The company has announced a number of high-profile projects, including a Star Wars series overseen by "Jungle Book" director Jon Favreau, a show based on "High School Musical", and a live-action "Lady and the Tramp" film. All of these items put together will surely inspire viewers to sign up for Disney's service. If the original performers like Hiddleston and Olsen are involved then it gives the new Marvel shows a more solidified relationship with the films.

There's an important distinction from other Marvel small screen efforts, however.

Intriguingly, Variety reports that Disney is looking for the movie actors to play the same roles in the TV shows, instead of going for a different cast. Streaming is the future, and Disney is exhausted of letting Netflix get all the glory.
