This new series will have original ATLA creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko serving as showrunners and executive producers.

Netflix plans to revisit Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Nickelodeon animated series that spawned The Legend of Korra and a series of comics and books, in a new way. The series will be exclusively available on Netflix and will go into production in 2019.

Avatar The Last Airbender animated TV series won the hearts of many anime fans with its stylistic cross-over appeal and serious reflection on themes that were at the time, not often looked at in kids programming on Nickelodeon.

"We're thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender", Konietzko and DiMartino said in a joint statement (viaEntertainment Weekly). The friends are known as benders, and through martial arts, each have the ability to manipulate an element.

What do you think of the new announcement? It followed the adventures of Aang, the latest incarnation of the legendary Avatar-the one being on the planet who could master all four essential elements. "We can't wait to realize Aang's world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast". And just in case anyone reading is still dubious about it, the streaming company tweeted out some official concept art.

The only blight on the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise (and the elephant-monkey in the room here) is the epically bad live-action film directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

The Last Airbender's last live-action effort was completely directed, written, and co-produced by M. Night Shyamalan, and it was panned commercially and critically for its deviations from the original series in its casting and editorial choices. "Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we're incredibly grateful to be partnering with them", explained Konietzko and DiMartino.
