Amazon's store expansion is beyond ideal for introverts

By rolling out 3,000 Amazon Go stores, Amazon would quickly become one of the biggest chains in the US, Bloomberg said.

Amazon Go grew from a single convenience-store site to four over the span of eight months.

The idea is to open up stores in dense urban areas with large populations of young, well-to-do folks who are happy to pay a premium for high-quality meals on the go.

Amazon.com is considering a plan to open as many as 3,000 new Amazon Go cashierless stores in the next few years, according to people familiar with matter, an aggressive and costly expansion that would threaten convenience chains like 7-Eleven, quick-service sandwich shops like Subway and Panera Bread, and mom-and-pop pizzerias and taco trucks.

Amazon Go sells an array of prepared food alongside grab-and-go convenience-store grocery staples. Customers pick up what they want and are scanned and charged automatically, without having to wait in line for a cashier to physically handle their purchase.

The ecommerce giant revealed plans (and a trial store) for its futuristic stores back in 2016, and opened the first Amazon Go location to the public in Seattle this January. Amazon now operates four such stores, three in Seattle and one in Chicago, and these are being used as trial-runs for a larger scale expansion of the business.

There are plans to open six more by the end of the year, and up to 50 stores in 2019. United Kingdom -based Pret has 450 locations worldwide, including New York, Boston and Chicago, focusing on fresh, healthy grab-and-go foods.

Having almost 3,000 locations would make Amazon Go the third-largest convenience store chain in the USA, just under 7-Eleven and the parent company of Circle K, according to CSP, an industry publication. While opening brick-and-mortar stores seems counter-intuitive to Amazon's e-tailer DNA, we shouldn't forget that companies such as Walmart are still raking in the profits and, in that case, are valued at three times as much as Amazon. Some of the most recent Amazon Go locations feature only the prepared-food section without a grocery selection.
