Second shark attack in Whitsundays in 24 hours

The 46-year-old suffered significant leg and torso injuries after being bitten at Cid Harbour, off Whitsunday Island, about 5pm on Wednesday.

A 12-year-old girl was attacked by a shark in waters off Australia's tropical northeast coast on Thursday (Sep 20), an ambulance official said, the second attack in the tourist region in as many days.

It's understood she was bleeding heavily from the leg injury when she was pulled from the water.

A local doctor adiministered first aid on board the boat, and she was quickly airlifted by rescue helicopter to hospital about 8pm.

"The people on scene who got her onboard that yacht and quickly packed the gaping wound to help stem the haemorrhaging undoubtedly saved her life", RACQ CQ rescue crewman Ben McCauley told Fairfax Media.

UPDATE, 2.40pm: A paramedic has reached the child who was attacked by a shark at Cid Harbour, the Queensland Ambulance Service has confirmed.

Now she is fighting for life in a Mackay hospital, having been dragged from the water by her husband and other terrified tourists after a horrifying shark attack on Wednesday afternoon.

Hadock said he treated Barwick before a helicopter crew winched her to safety and flew her to Mackay hospital, where a spokeswoman said Barwick is in critical condition.

They do, however, reduce the overall number of sharks in the area, making it a safer place to swim.

The incident occurred within 24 hours of an attack on a Tasmanian woman in the same area. Of these, two people died.
