Downton Abbey the movie - which now doesn't have an official title - will be released on 13 September 2019, with North America getting it on 20 September. On Sept. 20 stateside, Universal has the female comedy Little opening with Justin Hartley, Issa Rae and Marsai Martin.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski gave an update on the release schedule saying: "Since the series ended, fans of Downton have always been waiting for the Crawley family's next chapter".

He added, "We're thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen next September". And while Brian Percival was first named as the director, that duty will now go to Michael Engler, who directed several Downton episodes over the years, including the series finale.

Creator Fellowes has penned the screenplay for the film, and will produce alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. It also makes it all the more curious where the show will pick up when we return to it, and if it will just feel like a reunion or a vibrant new tale. The companies had announced on July 13 that the original principal cast from the television series - including Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, and Hugh Bonneville - would return for the movie.
