Meghan Markle hosted her first major event at Kensington Palace on Thursday and she did it alongside her mother, Doria Ragland, and husband, Prince Harry.

(AAP) Prince Harry and Doria looked on as Meghan impressed the crowd with her speech.

It was a day of celebration for the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen who rallied together to feed people affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster.

The duchess, 37, who had visited the cooks privately, added: 'I feel so proud to live in a city that can have so much diversity - 12 countries represented in this one group of women'.

The proceeds of sale from the book will support the Hubb Community Kitchen.

Speaking about it, the Duchess, who donned an apron to muck in with fellow volunteers on her visits, said she "immediately felt connected" to the kitchen, which she described as a "place for women to laugh, cry, grieve and cook together".

The Daily Mail reports that inviting a family member to an official royal event is unprecedented, meaning Ragland's appearance was very significant.

Thomas Markle pulled out of the May's spectacular wedding ceremony at the queen's Windsor Castle home after undergoing heart surgery and amid controversy that he had staged photos with a paparazzi photographer.

Sitting in the front seat of a Land Rover Discovery with her daughter and son-in-law in the back, she stepped out and greeted the waiting guests including Hubb coordinator Zahira Ghaswala with the words: "Hi, I'm Meg's mom". Use #GeniusKitchen to let us know what you're sharing!

Meghan says she felt "embraced" by the women from the community kitchen after just moving to London.

If ever there was proof needed of Prince Harry's love for his wife, this is it.

Meghan had joined the women as they cooked dishes and assisted with the preparations, and created a meal of coconut chicken curry, aubergine masala and chapatis. "And I just got my copy straight from Kensington Palace", she explained while flipping through the book's pages. The book is already a bestseller on Amazon and it's not even out yet.

"Meghan draws a lot of strength from her mother".
