Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. And while initial images of the actor in character have featured him in pre-villain, average-Joe mode (schlubby clothes, long scraggly hair), Phillips has - as you can see, both above and below - finally given the world a debut look at the star in full maniacal make-up. The makeup itself appears to be based off of a much more traditional clown style than we have previously seen for the Joker.

There are roughy 73874239 Joker movies in development, but director Todd Phillips' upcoming project has the edge - an actual Joker. How does this first impression stack up against Phoenix's rival Jared Leto Joker over in the DCEU? Now, Phillips has shared a camera test in which we get a look at Phoenix in full Joker makeup.

This reveal comes shortly after multiple set videos were released from the Joker origin film as well as an official image of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur.

Joker is now in production and is expected to be released next year. Phillips' exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Which would go some way to explain why De Niro is also in the cast list for this movie, as well as Zazie Beetz (who stole the show in Deadpool 2), comedian Marc Maron (Glow), and Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under), who is rumoured to be playing Phoenix's mother.
