Montreal Canadiens forward Max Domi has been suspended for the rest of the preseason by the NHL's department of player safety for his punch on an unsuspecting Aaron Ekblad Wednesday night.

Ekblad left Wednesday's game at the league's request and did not return.

3,513 - Number of penalty minutes racked up by Tie Domi - who was in the house to watch son, Max make his preseason debut - in his 17-year National Hockey League career, ranking him third all-time in National Hockey League history in that category.

With the Canadiens losing 2-1 at the start of the third period, Domi - acquired from Arizona in the offseason - began tugging on Ekblad's shirt, asking him to fight. Although the Florida Panthers defenceman had zero intentions of dropping the gloves, the Habs forward continued to hack away at Ekblad until he finally dropped him with a sucker punch. It was pretty clear that Ekblad didn't want to drop the gloves, so Domi has to back off there. The former was given a five-minute major and a match penalty for the punch while the latter had to be taken off after the concussion spotters gave the Panthers bench a call for him to undergo concussion testing.

Domi then dropped his right glove and sucker punched him right on the nose, and the bloodied Ekblad dropped to the ice.

"We definitely won't forget about it", Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo said.

Added Mike Hoffman: "I guess they were trying to showcase something over there".
