Tiger Woods will play in the final group at the Tour Championship for the second consecutive day after posting a 2-under round of 68 in the second round to keep a share of the lead.

Woods was on the verge of building a cushion Friday in the Tour Championship with three birdies in a four-hole stretch, only to make double bogey from the rough and a plugged lie in the bunker that forced him to play away from the hole at No. 16.

American Woods carded two-under-par 68, while Englishman Rose shot 67 at East Lake.

Woods last shared the 36-hole lead at the Wyndham Championship in 2015. He wound up tied for 10th.

The 42-year-old bounced back to birdie the par-five 18th and join Rose at the top of the leaderboard, with Rory McIlroy two shots off the lead on five under and Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Billy Horschel a shot further back. A flip wedge to 12 feet and two putts later, he was back in a tie with Rose. I'll come out and tell you I'm here to win this tournament and get that No. 1 spot, " McCarthy said.

"The rough's brutal", Woods said.

Woods isn't taking anything for granted as he goes for his 80th Tour victory on the weekend. "But I thought I could sneak it up there and get up on the upslope and have a good angle in there, and it just didn't work out".

DeChambeau is just one ahead of US Open and US PGA victor Brooks Koepka, who shot a 78 that left him dead last in the 30-man field on seven-over.

While Woods could win on Sunday and still not necessarily claim the season-long FedExCup points race and the $10 million bonus that goes with it, Rose's fate is in his own hands. Johnson rallied for a 70 and was six behind. Fisher made an eagle and 10 birdies on a par-71 course in the second round of the Portugal Masters. Glover was at 14-under 128.
