Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning and tornado watch at 6:29 p.m. on Friday for Ottawa, Gatineau, and surrounding areas.

He says the Greater Toronto Area saw wind gusts of up to 80 km/h.

The terrified woman was lucky to avoid injury as she took a severe hit from the tornado, with winds tearing through her vehicle, smashing her windows and leaving her with cuts and bruises on her face.

"It looked like something you'd see in a movie, or you'd see in tornado valley in Oklahoma", said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who had seen drone footage of the twister, told a press conference on Saturday.

The Ottawa paramedics association tweeted that it had responded to 16 tornado-related calls in the Dunrobin area, including people trapped in homes, basements, and cars, injuries from debris, and secondary trauma from the winds.

Anthony Di Monte, general manager of emergency and protective services, said Ottawa's building and fire services are assessing structural damage across the city.

More than 270,000 residents and businesses in the Ottawa and Gatineau region are still without power following Friday's violent storm.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted Friday night that his government was keeping an eye out on updates. We're monitoring the situation and thinking of everyone affected.
