However, Gronkowski threatened retirement to ensure he did not land with the Lions.

The Patriots were deep into trade discussions to send All-Pro Rob Gronkowski to the Lions, according to Adam Schefter.

This all went down during the weekend of the draft - per Schefter the two clubs "were deep into trade discussions last offseason that peaked during the week of the draft, when the teams almost completed a blockbuster trade".

Schefter noted that Gronk's decision to leverage his way onto the Patriots' 2018 roster was largely because he loved New England - and not necessarily because he didn't want to play for the Lions.

Gronkowski wanted to play in New England, with Tom Brady, or nowhere at all.

The report didn't mention who the Patriots would get in return for Gronkowski. That's when Gronkowski found out about the imminent deal - and put a stop to it.

Through two games this season, Gronkowski has nine catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. This marks the second consecutive year that the Patriots have added incentives to Gronkowski's contract. He popped up on the Patriots injury report Thursday but the ankle issue he dealt with was a minor one, and he is expected to be good to go Sunday night.
