Ride-hailing company Uber Technologies is in early talks to buy food delivery company Deliveroo, Bloomberg reported on September 20, citing people familiar with the matter.

Deliveroo was most recently valued at $US2 billion in a funding round a year ago.

Uber is in early talks to acquire food-delivery platform Deliveroo, according to reports.

The London-based company was last valued at over $2bn but any offer would be considerably above that valuation, according to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the plans. After selling its ride-hailing businesses in Southeast Asia, China and Russia, Uber is eager to buy competitors, rather than sell its remaining local businesses. Under CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber has redoubled its efforts around food delivery ahead of a planned 2019 IPO. The company is also considering other acquisitions, including taxi service Careem in the Middle East.

Founded in 2013 by Will Shu and Greg Orlowski, Deliveroo is UK's one of the most successful start-up stories.

Earlier this month, Deliveroo introduced the world's first "virtual Food Market". The negotiations abruptly ended after SoftBank concentrated on backing Uber. The service is available in more than 200 cities on four continents. It seems the United Kingdom food delivery start-up has deliberately avoided the USA market, cited Bloomberg. The two companies have been making good progress in taking market share for food delivery and combining forces would be enough to send shivers down the spine of Just Eat.

Deliveroo, which competes with companies such as Just Eat, said in July that an initial public offering is not off the cards but was not in a hurry.
