The exhibition event is taking place on USA soil for the first time and features 12 of the world's top players squaring off against each other in a three-day team event in Chicago. On Saturday, wins will be worth two points each instead of one.

Roger Federer whispers to Novak Djokovic during a men's doubles tennis match against Team World's Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson at the Laver Cup, Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, in Chicago.

Federer wasn't hurt by the shot and laughed it off, while Djokovic covered his face with his hands in embarrassment. But, the American and South African pair came back stronger in the second set and took it 6-3 to take the game into a tie-breaker. "It didn't look that great".

The lack of experience in doubles again showed up as Federer and Djokovic failed to match up the doubles specialist Sock and his partner Anderson.

"To team up with somebody of his caliber is just a treat, you know", he said.

Playing from the baseline, the US Open champion hit one of his booming cross-court forehands.right into the lower back of Federer, who was near the net.

Earlier in the singles, Britain's Kyle Edmund defeated Sock 6-4 5-7 10-6.

Sock and Anderson levelled the match and having seen their team-mates lose in two deciders earlier in the day, the pair made sure not to waste their opportunity when Federer double-faulted at 4-4.

"It was a lot of fun".

Edmund overcame Sock 6-4 5-7 (10-6) despite struggling with his serve at times and coughing up four double faults, before Goffin staved off a late rally on his way to a 6-4 4-6 (11-9) triumph over Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

Day Two will feature three more singles clashes, including Federer v Nick Kyrgios, and an additional doubles match, with two points on offer for any victory.
