The panel has delayed its vote on whether to advance Kavanaugh's confirmation to the full Senate in order to hear Blasey's testimony.

Kavanaugh has denied Ramirez's accusation and labeled it a "smear".

Christine Blasey Ford, a 51-year-old research psychologist in Northern California, has alleged Kavanaugh pinned her down, groped her and tried to remove her clothes when they were high school students around 1982. Jim Inhofe said of Kavanaugh.

The Kavanaugh controversy is unfolding just weeks before November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from Republicans, against a backdrop of the #MeToo movement fighting sexual harassment and assault.

McConnell also said the Senate had hired a woman lawyer to do the questioning of Kavanaugh and his accuser for Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee during Thursday's hearing.

A second accuser, Deborah Ramirez, 53, a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh's, told The New Yorker that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a dorm room party and "thrust his penis in her face", causing her to "touch it without her consent as she pushed him away".

James Roche, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's freshman roommate at Yale, remembers Kavanaugh as a "notably heavy drinker", even for college, who got "belligerent" and "aggressive" when drunk.

"The truth is I've never sexually assaulted anyone, in high school or otherwise", Kavanaugh said.

"And now a new charge comes up", Trump said.

It's been a particularly traumatizing week for victims of sexual assault and harassment.

On the same day that he treated the United Nations General Assembly to its own special Trump rally in a speech that drove the usually staid gathering of diplomats and bureaucrats to laughter, the president went off at impressive length about the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh during a press conference at the U.N. with the Colombian president Iván Duque Márquez.

Ramirez recalled playing a drinking game at the party, resulting in her becoming inebriated. Judiciary chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking committee Democrat Sen. She has acknowledged that there were "significant gaps" in her memory of that party.

The Senate Republicans who oversaw three days of hearings on Kavanaugh are preparing to hand over their normal investigative role int he blockbuster hearing set for Thursday.

"Certainly we would be open to that, and that process could take place on Thursday", Sanders said during an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America, adding: "The president has been clear, let them speak".
