Trump accepts Nikki Haley's resignation as UN ambassador

The "news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the Trump administration", Swan reported.

Update: Again, although I don't think it's connected to the Times op-ed, Haley was in fact a leading suspect among some Trump allies, as was one of her top deputies, Jon Lerner.

Haley, often talked about as a future presidential candidate, and Trump spoke at a news conference after the announcement. But the group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said in its complaint that Haley's financial disclosure did not provide enough information to make the assertion that the flights between New York, Washington, DC, and three SC cities qualified for the exemption.

Haley "has done an outstanding job" in her role as ambassador, fellow South Carolinian Lindsey Graham said.

"The US is strong a way that should make all Americans proud", she said. "I'll never truly step aside from fighting for our country. Rather, I will respectfully speak some hard truths".

First, she told Trump she wanted to be a member of the Cabinet and the National Security Council, privileges enjoyed by her predecessors in the Obama administration.

In her brief White House press conference with President Trump, Haley said it was her "honor" to have defended America.

"Now, the United States is respected", she said.

"We are a better country because they are in this administration", Haley enthused. "I mean, when he goes and he is very truthful, they kind of were taken back by it".

She told him: "Thank you, Mr President".

She spoke often of the need for change within the United Nations and its peacekeeping forces, and frequently chastised United Nations agencies for taking anti-Israel stances. When there is disagreement, there is a right way and a wrong way to address it.

It became Haley's defining characteristic.

But she said on Tuesday she would not be running in 2020 and would campaign for Trump. The retort quickly earned her an apology.

Trump called his resigning ambassador a "fantastic person" who has done a "fantastic job" and "somebody who gets it". Her staff was reportedly only told of her plans to leave this morning. She's not going to blow that now by undertaking a futile primary campaign that'll completely alienate the former and partially alienate the latter by wrecking the party's only hope for White House control in 2021, namely, Trump's reelection.

Haley, 46, remains a rising Republican star who now has traditional foreign policy bona fides to add to her experience as a two-term governor.

The watchdog group, citing Haley's 2017 financial disclosures, said Haley and her husband accepted seven flights on luxury private aircraft from three SC businessmen, but that Haley claimed the flights qualified for an exception based on a personal relationship with the giver.
