A panel of journalists selects the Ballon d'Or victor which was first established in 1956 and will this year feature a women's award for the first time.

Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah has a global appeal, we all know that, but does he really deserve to win the 2018 Balon d'Or?

Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, two key members of the France national team that sailed to their second-ever World Cup trophy are also likely to finish with high tallies, as are Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne, members of Belgium's star-studded side that came third at Russian Federation 2018.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been included in the list alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in contention to retain the Ballon d'Or for the third successive year after being named on the 30-man shortlist.

Ronaldo's nomination comes after the 33 year old last week denied rape allegations levelled against him by a woman who sued him in court in the United States.

The Manchester United midfielder was named on the 30-man shortlist for the award for the best player of the year, with the victor to be announced in Paris on December 3.

Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale and Manchester City's Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne also featured among a list of familiar names.

Roberto Firmino from Brazil, Liverpool and Diego Godin from Uruguay, Atletico Madrid.

However, Fifa ended its association with the award in September 2016.

France Football released its list of thirty nominees for the 2018 edition of the prestigious Ballon d'Or award in separate intervals on Monday.

PSG's Mbappe appears a dead certainty for the newly-introduced Kopa Trophy, which rewards the best players under 21, and is voted on by previous Ballon d'Or winners.
