Cirque du Soleil's Messi show is set to be launched in 2019, with tour dates yet to be confirmed.

Cirque du Soleil is putting together a show based on the life of soccer star Lionel Messi.

"It feels both insane and incredible that Cirque du Soleil will create a show based on my life, my passion, my sport", Messi, 31, said in a video on the group's website.

"I have no doubt this show will amaze people as their shows always do".

He is the latest global entertainer to be honoured by the Montreal-based circus company, which previously put on shows about Michael Jackson and The Beatles.

Messi is a five-time Ballon d'Or victor and has won four Champions Leagues with Barcelona, where he has spent his entire playing career.

"The show will draw its inspiration from the incredible talent and accomplishments of the football legend, who embodies the unique spirit and values of his sport", a statement on the Cirque du Soleil website read.

"Cirque du Soleil is a family favourite of ours". The show will celebrate Messi's legacy in the circus' signature style, while highlighting the rich culture that makes Messi's sport the most popular around the world.

"We are thrilled to be working with such a living legend", added Jonathan Tetrault, president and chief operating officer at Cirque du Soleil.
