Christensen: I’m in a bad situation at Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri's shift to a back four has reduced Chelsea's starting centre-back spots from three to two this season, and the return from exile of a rejuvenated David Luiz alongside Antonio Rudiger has left Christensen invariably among the substitutes.

The 22-year-old held down a first-team place under Antonio Conte but since Sarri's arrival in the summer, the Denmark worldwide has not played a single minute in the Premier League.

He said: "It has been a hard season. To be honest, it has been very hard", Christensen told BTSport.

Alonso signed a five-year contract on joining the Blues from Fiorentina in August 2016, but now the 27-year-old is poised to be rewarded for his performances.

"Right now, it's not a good season for me, but I have to find some way to get back on", the 22-year-old told Danish publication BT.

He added: "It has been difficult to get into the team, and when we get the good results that we now do, it will only be even harder".

But it is clear that it is not a good situation for me.

Christensen first linked up with Chelsea in 2012 after seeing his obvious potential noted within the youth ranks at Brondby. Christensen came back to Chelsea in 2017, and since then he has made a total appearance of 46 games in all competitions so far. Next up they will face BATE in the third round of the group stage.

If he were to replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United before the New Year, it's thought that Conte would lose out on around £5m - with an agreement in place that any compensation would be wavered were he to join another Premier League side.

Fans have reacted on Twitter to Christensen's comments.
