Google Home Hub - Google Assistant With A Display

Called Google Home Hub, it's a smart display with built-in Google Assistant.

We've covered Smart Displays before and the entire concept dates all the way back to CES 2018 back in January. As you can see from the image above, you can use it to guide you through cooking something.

Google Home Hub costs $149/£139 and comes with 6 months of YouTube Premium.

Google Home Hub is a Google Home-branded speaker with a 7-inch LCD display that floats on a speaker base. It says the sensor "automatically detects and matches over 16 million combinations of light and colour, so your photos blend in with your home decor". It also has soft rounded corners, and is created to sit on a range of surfaces, such as the kitchen counter or nightstand, according to Google. Most people assumed that Google's own smart display, the recently-announced Home Hub, would use the same software and hardware. The smart display wars are only just starting, but choosing security and privacy over more features could ultimately serve Google well. For one thing, the pill found on the Pixel 3 launcher's app drawer once again contains the Google Assistant icon on the right side.

GoogleWhat are the technical specs? As more pictures of those people are added, Google will dynamically update the album on the Home Hub. Asking for the weather will give you a full forecast, and you can follow up and ask to see more.

There's also better integration with Google's Nest products. All they need is to have the new Google Home app installed and you can all live the convenient, smart home lifestyle. But the Google Home Hub isn't the hub I wanted.

Google opted to leave off the camera for this one, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. Furthermore, Google Home users are getting the ability to increase or decrease playback speed of news and podcasts, a feature that was only available for audiobooks previously. And, when it's time for bed, it'll dim the screen. Updated to make the Smart Home lifestyle easier, the app now shows all your compatible smart home devices in a single view.

The smart home consumer at-large however just wants a clean, simple way to interact with the devices they have. Not only would this enhance the experience that customers already had using Google Homes, but it would be a direct competitor to Amazon's Echo Show and Spot. The Home Hub screen really doesn't look much larger than a smartphone.

At the MadeByGoogle event in NYC on Tuesday, I spent some time with the new hub. And that's exactly what the Google Home Hub is all about.

One thing to note is that buying from Verizon and picking up a device in store should be possible on October 18, but may result in receiving a device with a locked bootloader as well as unwanted Verizon apps pre-loaded onto the phone. It'll be in stores from 22 October in the U.S. and UK.
