Cooper says the coast could get tropical storm force winds and some parts of the state receive up to seven inches of rain.

North Carolina State Fair manager Kent Yelverton said Wednesday the event won't open as planned on Thursday.

Along the coast, it was a rainy and windy Wednesday, but nearly every off-season business remained open.

Michael came ashore in Florida on Wednesday as a Category 4 hurricane.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for multiple counties in northeast SC and southeastern North Carolina, the Observer reported.

Wind gusts could reach up to 55 miles per hour Thursday in the Myrtle Beach area, and NWS warns that weakened or poorly rooted trees could topple, causing power outages.

The outage projection is "based on the company's storm modeling tool, which analyzes variables including storm magnitude and track, wind speed, size of the wind field and ground saturation", according to Duke Energy.

"I just don't see the business being here with all the winds", Griffith said.

The area could also see an increased risk of tornadoes on Thursday.

Smith said it was the first time she could remember the fair closing for a full day in 35 years. The middle of what will be a tropical storm will pass over the city at about noon, they added.
