Ties between Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been tense over regional political differences, although the kingdom is a major investor in the Turkish economy.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders added that the U.S. would continue to inquire about the fate of the journalist.

According to security sources the preliminary estimations of the Turkish police suggest that Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, that the killing was planned and the body of Khashoggi was taken out of the consulate.

Khashoggi had fled his homeland in September previous year and had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States, where he had applied for USA citizenship, Cengiz said. "It's a bad thing".

"We're working very closely with Turkey and I think we'll get to the bottom of it", Trump said today.

He also predicted that final results of Turkey's investigations may dissuade the USA administration and Trump from continued support for bin Salman.

Trump declined to say whom he talked with in the Saudi government.

A team of 15 Saudis who flew in from Saudi Arabia to visit and leave the consulate on the same day of Khashoggi's disappearance is suspected of playing a role in his disappearance, people familiar with the investigation said in a Washington Post report.

Khashoggi, 59, was reportedly killed within two hours of arriving at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

Riyadh insisted the Khashoggi left the building and called the murder claims "baseless".

Saudi Arabia denies involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance, and the Trump's administration's response has been far more cautious than that coming from Capitol Hill.

"It's a great concern for the United States of America", Mr. Pence said in a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt that aired Wednesday. Now you will say that I encourage others to kill. "I have to abide by whatever the courts decide", he said.

"Jamal has many friends in the Kingdom, including myself, and despite our differences, and his choice to go into his so called 'self-exile, ' we still maintained regular contact when he was in Washington", Khalid bin Salman added.

Turkey has backed Qatar in its dispute with Saudi Arabia and its neighbors.

The move added pressure on close USA ally Riyadh to provide more information on the whereabouts of the prominent critic of Saudi policies, whose disappearance has sparked global concern.

The Turkish Daily Sabah has released the identities of the Saudi operatives, who had apparently travelled from Riyadh to Istanbul on two private jets and entered the Saudi mission on October 2 as Khashoggi entered the building.

The last-known CCTV images of Saudi dissident and journalist Jamal Khashoggi show him walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week.

Khashoggi has written articles in The Washington Post that were critical of the Saudi regime and its intervention in the war in Yemen.

The fiancee of a missing Saudi contributor to The Washington Post is asking President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump to "help shed light" on his disappearance.

She also urged Saudi Arabia's leaders to release security camera video from the consulate area.

The footage allegedly shows the men arriving at the airport and checking into a hotel, as well as a van arriving at the consul-general's residence two hours after Khashoggi entered the consulate, about 250 metres away.

Trump, speaking to reporters Wednesday in the Oval Office, said he had spoken "more than once" with Saudi officials in recent days but didn't provide details of the conversations. Their names and photographs have been published in a Turkish newspaper.
