He warned there could be more people missing.

At least six people are believed to have died when torrential rainstorms deluged the town of Sant Llorenc, about 40 miles east of the capital, Palma, on Tuesday evening.

Mr Green, 77, and his wife, 75, were being driven to a hotel in Cala Bona when the taxi was caught by the floodwaters, Diario de Mallorca reported.

Piles of rubbish and wrecked furniture cluttered the streets in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, one of the worst-hit villages, while locals with the aid of volunteers used mops to clean up the water flooding their homes.

Bauza told Cadena SER radio that two other victims were local residents, including an elderly woman whose body was found in the basement of her house.

"We are supporting the family of two British people following their deaths in Spain, and will do all we can to assist them at this deeply hard time", Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement.

Two further victims died in the town of S'illot, authorities said.

"It all happened in less than 10 minutes", an unidentified witness with wet clothes told the public broadcaster TVE.

He said: "My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all the affected by these tragic floods", he said.

World number one tennis star Rafael Nadal, who is from the island, was seen joining in with the clean-up effort. When she finally made it home on Wednesday, all she found was chaos.

Nadal has allowed those needing shelter to stay in his academy.

Rescue workers and military units from the Spanish mainland were heading to the area which is popular with British holidaymakers.

At least three towns closed schools and hundreds of people were sheltered in sports facilities and a local hippodrome, authorities said.

Dramatic video footage on social media shows raging torrents of water gushing through the streets of the town, with reports that more than 20 centimetres of rain fell in just four hours.
