The treatment of ball boys and girls has been high on the agenda in the sport recently, but it is fair to assume Zverev didn't mean to scare the child during his win over Nicoloz Basilashvili.

"Obviously he's playing the best tennis of his life, winning in Beijing, and obviously he had a very good match yesterday, as well".

'He knows how to play, definitely. Probably the hardest-hitting player I have ever played against'.

British number one Kyle Edmund went through to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters with victory over Chile's Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.

The 21-year-old will face an opponent younger than him in his next round when he takes on teenager Alex De Minaur.

Meanwhile, Zverev said on Wednesday that he will not play in the new-format Davis Cup finals in November 2019 because he needs the time off, calling the scheduling "crazy".

'I played an opponent who has a lot of confidence, ' he said.

"I think all the top guys will say the same thing".

"Making a tournament end of November which is 10 days playing and competing, it's insane".

Defending champion Roger Federer began his campaign with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over big-serving Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Lendl is due to return to the tour before the end of the season.
