Taylor Swift sets new American Music Award record, urges people to vote

Referring to the fact the awards were "voted for by the people", Swift said: "You know what else is voted on by the people?", before telling fans to "get out and vote" at the midterm elections. "Don't let people tell you your vote doesn't count. Get out and vote", Swift said when accepting her trophy.

The show - which aired on a Tuesday as opposed to the typical Sunday - dropped approximately 29 percent in total viewers after drawing 9.2 million previous year, the outlet reports. Considering she's only 28 years old and it doesn't seem like she's planning on ending her music career anytime soon, it definitely seems possible that she could pull this one out! The singer made her first awards show performance at the AMAs in three years with "I Did Something Bad". However, what really put cardi on top was her completely out of control performance of "I Like It'".

Other winners included Post Malone (male pop/rock artist), Khalid (male soul/R&B artist), and country star Carrie Underwood, who accepted her 13th American Music Award.

And there was a little more heartache at the end of the ceremony as Gladys Knight, CeCe Winans, Ledisi, Mary Mary, and Donnie McClurkin performed a tribute to the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

Despite having the year's top-selling album and three number one hits, Drake missed out on an award.
