Pogba has faced criticism for failing to repeat his impressive performances at the World Cup for United, who have slumped early in the season.

Mourinho has also had his differences with Paul Pogba and he recently stripped the Frenchman of the vice captaincy.

While several fans, players, and even football pundits have opined that the Old Trafford club must part ways with the underperforming manager, a few notable figures, such as club legend Wayne Rooney and ex-boss David Moyes, have spoken in support of Mourinho.

"I've never played for the France team to be captain, already being here is a big thing for me" Pogba said.

Mourinho said at the time: 'The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fall-out, no problems at all.

"I could say what I felt, give messages and pass them on from the older players to the younger ones".

"I couldn't have done it without them".

The 25-year-old was at the heart of Didier Deschamps' triumphant side in Russian Federation but returned to a hard situation at United after being dropped from Jose Mourinho's starting XI towards the end of last season. "That allows me to relay messages and have the chance to be heard", he said.

"For me, a leader isn't someone who wears something on his arm, who puts on the captain's armband".

Prior to the World Cup, Pogba had stated his ambition of stepping up his role within the France squad, and he was credited by teammates with having given a number of inspirational dressing room speeches during Les Bleus' summer triumph.

'As a leader you can talk on the pitch but I've seen leaders who didn't necessarily talk'.
