Alban's party, First Justice, blamed the government for the death.

He "requested to go to the bathroom, and when there he threw himself off the 10th floor", Attorney General Tareq Saad told Venezuelan state TV.

As global criticism of Maduro's government grew, Alban's family, fellow politicians and family members of other jailed activists paid a final tribute to him Tuesday in a ceremony at the opposition-controlled Congress. They later assembled outside Caracas' morgue to demand his body be handed over as rumors spread he would be cremated to hide evidence of possible torture.

According to reports, former Venezuelan parliamentarian Julio Borges who is living in Colombia is suspected to have played a role in the assassination attempt.

While Venezuelans past year watched as dozens of youth were killed in violent street battles with security forces, the death of activists while in the government's custody is a fate more associated with the far deadlier dictatorships that dominated much of South America in the 1970s.

Fernando Alban was arrested last week for alleged involvement in the explosion of two drones during a military parade that was led by President Nicolas Maduro which injured seven soldiers in August. "The only thing left for this government is torture, violence and destruction".

Rights groups and the opposition have said that Mr Maduro's administration is holding hundreds of political prisoners on trumped-up charges meant to stifle dissent.

"We are concerned about news of his death".

"We do indeed call for a transparent, independent investigation to clarify the circumstances of his death".

"This is disturbing, and the government has a responsibility to ensure all understand how that could have happened", Mr Corker, a Republican, said on Twitter.

"The EU reiterates its call to the Venezuelan government to release all political prisoners", added EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic.

The regime said Alban, who was jailed last Friday, had committed suicide by jumping from the 10th floor of the state intelligence agency headquarters (SEBIN) where he was incarcerated.

Venezuela's Attorney General Tarek William Saab said Monday that jailed councilman Fernando Alberto Alban Salazar, who was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a failed assassination attempt on President Nicolas Maduro, has died of suicide. Garcia said authorities can not determine that a death is a suicide without an investigation and he would ask to be present at the autopsy.
