Shanghai - Rising star Alexander Zverev brushed aside Australia's new teenage number one Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 to reach the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals on Thursday.

Standing in his way of a quarter-final appearance is German Zverev, who enjoyed an impressive second round win over in-form Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5 6-4. Basilashvili had just won Beijing for his second career ATP title and dismissed Denis Shapovalov in his Shanghai opener before running into Zverev.

"Probably the hardest-hitting player I have ever played against", said Zverev. "It's going to be interesting, it's going to be another fun match hopefully and I'm looking forward to tomorrow", concluded the German. "I did what I could; I didn't run too much". Zverev is playing in Shanghai without his coach, Ivan Lendl, who was in Beijing last week. "I have been talking with the doctors every day". Lendl is due to return to the tour before the end of the season.

Cecchinato eventually wilted with a netted backhand in game seven to fall behind 4-3 and Djokovic's early unsettlement began to ease as he served out the first set after a 45-minute battle.

In an interview, Swiss Tennis legend Roger Federer had said that the ball boys and ball girls need to be respected by players. But I think I played with all my strength in the important moments of the match.
