"You don't want to have them leaving with feeling, oh my God, I was not appreciated or I was not liked or it was a frightful thing".

Though the world No. 28 is a former finalist at this tournament, Federer was expected to storm through but he stuttered to a 6-3 2-6 6-4 win over the Spaniard.

"I'm in Asia, of course I want to play tennis here, but I don't want to put at risk my health also".

However, the Swiss is a great champion for a reason and he found a late surge to rip the match away from his opponent to set up a quarter-final clash with Kei Nishikori.

Having lost a set for the first time in eight meetings with Bautista Agut, Federer cut down his errors before breaking in the ninth game en route to his 38th match win of the season. I think I had 80 per cent first serves in that second set and he broke me twice so he was feeling it.

Federer led Bautista Agut by a set and a service break when he became entangled in a battle that lasted until the penultimate game of the third set.

He will join Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro, who have also booked their places at The O2 in London from 11-18 November.

Third-seeded Del Potro, who has had a cold throughout the week, was playing Borna Coric when he fell near the end of the first set.

Then a game later, he played another very poor game to gift the set to an ailing Del Potro 7-5.

Djokovic earned partial revenge when he beat Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-0.

Thiem has played in Shanghai four times and has never advanced to the third round.

It appears to be working and the 20-time Grand Slam victor opens his defence of the Shanghai Masters this week in ominously good shape. I always say when you win a Slam in any season, it's actually a very good season already. He's bidding to win a record fourth Shanghai title this week.

The Swiss looks some way short of his best form and for the second match in a row dropped a set.

Djokovic will play South Africa's Kevin Anderson or the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals.

He will face the young, Aussie No. 1 Alex De Minaur who defeated the flamboyant Frenchman Benoit Paire easily in straight, 6-4, 6-3 sets.

Edmund, Britain's number one, defeated Chile's Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.
