England had reached 92 for 2 after being asked to bat, but a heavy storm swept in and despite the entire playing surface being covered, the umpires eventually deemed a wet outfield unsuitable for a shortened game.

'I just pushed my run up back a bit and felt I could cruise into it a little bit better, and look for more rhythm rather than being at the top end forcing it all the time, and putting more stress on my body. He added that they have been playing well and further told that they are very aware of Sri Lanka's quality in home conditions.

Morgan has previously left himself out of England white-ball sides to allow others a chance - Jos Buttler has taken on the captaincy - and if he does not feel he is contributing enough to the team cause it is a move he would making even at a World Cup.

'It would be a fearless call, but we have come a long way with this team and we need to put ourselves in the best position to be contenders, ' said Morgan as England kept their fingers firmly crossed for dry weather. We need to put ourselves in the best position in order to be contenders. That he missed the Asia Cup debacle (through injury) was probably a good thing, but having also been suspended for the visit of South Africa in August, it is now nine months since he last played an ODI. We have some mystery spinners as well. "When the situation comes we have some game plans which we will have to execute".

"In the last few days, we worked really hard on our fielding individually and as a group", he said.

After Sri Lanka won the toss, Roy and Bairstow looked in fluent touch, hitting eight fours between them in as many overs, with Bairstow also striking off-spinner Akila Dananjaya for six. Against Australia at Trent Bridge in June, they notched up a 50-over world record score of 481 as Alex Hales blasted 147 and Jonny Bairstow 139. The three-match Test series will take place in Galle, Pallekele, and Colombo respectively. Morgan was reminded of the series in 2014, when England toured Sri Lanka during the monsoons (November-December) but all the seven games were completed and the hosts registered a 5-2 series win.

Moreover, the selectors appointed Dinesh Chandimal as the captain of Sri Lanka and dropped Mathews for England ODI's.

"It was frustrating, especially as the umpires did call for the covers before the rain arrived, because when it rains here it rains for hours", England captain, Eoin Morgan said.
