Allen announced in early October that the cancer he beat in 2009, had returned, and earlier today it was announced that he had passed. I have learned so much from him - his inquisitiveness, curiosity and push for high standards is something that will continue to inspire me and all of us at Microsoft.

The company also released a statement on behalf of Allen's sister Jody.

Allen was born January 21, 1953 in Seattle and met Gates while attending Lakeside School. For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends.

"Paul Allen was the driving force behind keeping the National Football League in the Pacific Northwest", Goodell said. "At this time of loss and grief for us - and so many others - we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day". Of course, Allen spent a lot that money on philanthropic causes. He founded the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the aerospace firm Stratolaunch, which has built a colossal airplane created to launch satellites into orbit.

Allen later joined the list of America's wealthiest people who pledged to give away the bulk of their fortunes to charity.

Paul donated more than $2 billion to various charities. Allen officially resigned from his position on the Microsoft board of directors in November 2000 but was asked to consult as a senior strategy advisor to the company's executives.

Many from the Blazers, Seahawks, and elsewhere around the National Basketball Association and NFL offered their thoughts on Allen and sent their condolences to his family after learning of the news, including former Microsoft CEO and current Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. Allen purchased the Portland Trail Blazers in 1988 and the Seattle Seahawks in 1996, with the Seahawks winning one Super Bowl during his tenure as owner. Allen could sometimes be seen at games or chatting in the locker room with players.
