Pepperell headed into moving day with a three-shot at advantage and ended it with the same cushion on nine under after carding a one-under 71.

Fatigue was blamed for many of America's woes at the Ryder Cup, with U.S. stars citing mental exhaustion following a hectic period of tournaments in the build-up to Paris.

Fleetwood, who will play in China and Turkey before contesting the season-ending event in Dubai, added: "I'm a long way behind but it's the opposite of last year in that I led all year last year and this year for the final few events I'm kind of chasing it now".

Sky Sports' Tim Barter caught up with the 27-year-old shortly thereafter, when he was his usual good-humoured self.

The nearest challengers to Pepperell, who won the Qatar Masters this year and almost made it into Europe's Ryder Cup team, were Matt Wallace (72) and Julien Guerrier, who was 3 under after 15 holes of his second round when play was suspended.

Wallace, a three-times victor on the European Tour this year, said he had been buoyed after having a chat with victorious Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn earlier this week. "This week I feel a bit more (tired) and next week I'll be having a week off".

"It's going to be a little unusual to try and beat each other instead of playing as a team", Molinari said. 'The quest for the 2020 Ryder Cup starts here. Certainly, neither will ever be found wanting for self- confidence but there's nothing wrong with that when you can back it up with deed.

"I think I've made quite a big stride mentally the last 18 months", he said. On the seventeenth, a wild tee shot finished in a cup holder in a buggy which had been parked to the left of the green.

"Luckily it didn't go in the beer [in the buggy] because it would have ruined a drink and the golf ball". It wasn't a great shot, but bogey was fine. There's an argument there's too many tournaments, and it's a shame that these ones with history and ones that get support [are allowed to disappear].

Pepperell was only two in front after he reeled off six pars in a row, but had more breathing space when he sunk a 14-foot putt for an eagle three at 11.
