Saudi Arabia has pledged to economically retaliate for any USA punitive action.

Speaking to reporters after a phone call with King Salman, Mr Trump said the Saudi leader had firmly denied knowing what had happened to Mr Khashoggi.

The king, Trump reported, suggested it could have been "rogue killers".

"He didn't really know, maybe - I don't want to get into his mind but it sounded to me - maybe these could have been rogue killers".

"I plan to give the Senate another chance to vote on my resolution to end our support for the war in Yemen, to reassert congressional authority over matters of war, and to show the Saudis that they do not have a blank check to continue human rights violations". However, the Turkish side rejected this offer and pro-government daily Sabah reported last week that officials wanted to search the building with luminol, a chemical that allows the discovery of blood traces.

Since the controversy over Saudi Arabia's involvement in the disappearance of Khashoggi, who hasn't been seen since he entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October 2, a number of top executives, companies and news outlets have dropped out of the summit, an event meant to highlight investment in the country.

Police officers carrying files and equipment walked through the heavy metal doors of the consulate after sunset, carrying out an extraordinary search of a diplomatic post that is otherwise considered foreign soil under global law as worldwide concern grows for the missing Washington Post columnist.

On Monday, King Salman ordered an investigation into the case.

The official said the prosecutor had been instructed to work quickly. "The recent disappearance and likely assassination of Jamal Khashoggi only underscores how urgent it has become for the United States to redefine our relationship with Saudi Arabia", Sanders wrote on Twitter.

On Sunday, Riyadh angrily rejected political and economic "threats" over the case of the missing journalist and said it would respond to any punitive action "with a bigger one".

He also said Mnuchin should skip the Saudi conference.

The America-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared in early October after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. But since the disappearance of Khashoggi, numerous event's high-profile media sponsors and journalists are pulling out in a show of solidarity, reports CNN.

This would not explain why the Saudi team allegedly brought a bone saw with them to the consulate.
