"But now it's time for two performers that I have worked with and respected - and actually hand-picked for the guardianship of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch - to take my alter-egos into their hands and continue to give them life", he continued. "And even Oscar, once in a while!", he added.

Some of his final recording session will be included in the Sesame Street 50th anniversary special set to air in 2019 on HBO. Since then, he has only provided the voices for Big Bird and Oscar.

The beloved bird, who stands more than eight feet tall has been feted with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, celebrated with his likeness on a United States postage stamp, and named a "Living Legend" in 2000 by the Library of Congress. He also met wife Debra on the show, and they've been married for 45 years.

One of Sesame Street's most familiar faces is leaving the neighborhood.

"Before I came to Sesame Street, I didn't feel like what I was doing was important", he said.

After 50 years of starring as the iconic and lovable Big Bird, Caroll Spinney is hanging up his yellow suit and retiring from "Sesame Street". He also served in the United States Air Force, but he said that Sesame Street's positive message to its young audience made him feel like he was really fulfilling a objective in life.

Spinney's work on the children's programme has earned him two Grammy honours and six Emmy awards, plus a Lifetime Achievement Emmy award which he received in 2006. Jeffrey Dunn, the president and chief executive for the Sesame Workshop, told The Times that, "Big Bird has always had the biggest heart on Sesame Street, and that's Caroll's gift to us..." And even Oscar, once in a while!

Outside of Sesame Street, Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch have also appeared in multiple Muppet movies, including The Muppet Movie and The Muppets Take Manhattan, the feature-length-film Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird is a must-watch for children. Matt Vogel is taking over the role of Big Bird, he's also Count von Count and Kermit the Frog, and Eric Jacobson will play Oscar the Grouch.
