How they got rid of Roseanne on 'The Conners'

The lingering question of "What will happen to Roseanne?" on the premiere of The Conners may not be as pressing and riveting as "Who shot JR?" but it certainly is one of the TV history books. Her character says Dan's actions have hurt her, that almost everyone in Lanford has started trading medication because no one has insurance, that she had no idea Roseanne had an addiction, and that she knows "what it's like to have that problem".

The new series features the blue-collar family from "Roseanne" returning to the small screen five months after its namesake star and creator, Roseanne Barr, was sacked and the original show was canceled over a racist tweet.

Executive producer Bruce Rasmussen said the makers of The Conners had thought carefully about how to write out Roseanne's character. His wife took the pills of her own free will, after all. The show had dealt with the character's reliance on pain medication in last year's revival as Roseanne developed a pill addiction after her knee surgery, but Darlene and Dan are still shocked by the news and claim they didn't realize how big her problem was. As Dominic Patten mentioned in his review The Conners, "she wasn't abducted from her IL town by aliens, didn't move away nor is in a coma" to figure out what happened to the matriarch.

As for the second mystery-the case of the new credits sequence-they unfurled in the final moments of the episode as the family sat down for a traditional American breakfast. "The autopsy found that it wasn't a heart attack".

The first episode of The Conners ends on a bittersweet note with Dan getting back into the marital bed for the first time in the three weeks since Roseanne's death, and reaching out an arm to an empty pillow beside him.

The characters then learn that Roseanne had several pain pill suppliers and kept stashes of them hidden all over the house - and that her death was caused by an accidental overdose.

The Conners did not begin with the immediate aftermath of former main character Roseanne Conner's death.

Actor John Goodman and actress/executive producer Roseanne Barr attend The Roseanne Series Premiere at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California March 23, 2018.

Eventually, Mary (played by guest star Mary Steenburgen) confronts Dan saying that she didn't kill Roseanne and that they were exchanging pills. Darlene reveals the pills found in the freezer, acknowledging that Rosanne "was getting pills from lots of people". He finally comes to the realization that the overdose was true.
